Municipal Agent for the Elderly/ Social Services Director

Municipal Agent for the Elderly is appointed by Town under state law to represent interests of senior citizens. Assists seniors and their families by providing information on and referrals to public and private local, state and federal agencies, organizations and institutions and helping seniors apply for benefits.

Volunteers operate several social programs with funding from local faith groups, Town of Guilford, Guilford Community Fund. Programs confidential and not confined to seniors.
Meals on Wheels. Meals delivered Mon.-Fri. around 11 a.m. Weekend meals also delivered Fri. Sliding scale: $4 or less.
Friendly Visiting is outreach program carefully matching volunteers with homebound or isolated people.
Charlie’s Closet accepts donations of used medical equipment, cleans and checks equipment for safety, then provides it to people in community for $1 each item.
Guilford Food Bank, jointly managed with Town of Guilford, provides food to any resident in need. Distribution done Fri., 3-4:30 p.m. at 45 Stone House Lane.

Shoreline Institute of Lifelong Learning

Diverse slate of academic programs taught (in daytime) by experts at college level. Modest fees.

Senior Bus, operated in cooperation with Guilford Seniors Program—contact 203-453-8086—provides transportation as follows:
• For banking, hair care, medical purposes and grocery shopping within Guilford: Reservations required 48 hrs.
in advance.
• For wheelchair transportation in or out of Guilford: Reservations required 48 hrs. in advance. Wheelchair
passengers must be accompanied by aide.

Complementary Paratransit Service Under Americans With Disabilities Act provides door-to-door transportation—within 3/4 mi. of public fixed route bus service in certain towns and cities--to any certified individual unable to use fixed route service because of permanent or temporary disability.
Regional Rides Program, open to residents 60+ or disabled, provides curb-to-curb transportation in certain towns and cities. Trip can be for any purpose. Fare: $2.50 one-way. Reservations required.

Fire Department/ Emergency Medical Services

Mission of Department “is to provide highest quality fire protection, emergency medical services, fire prevention, safety education, community services, mitigation of emergency and non-emergency incidents” for citizens and visitors to Guilford. Ambulance Service and Rescue Squad: Ambulance Service staffed by both full- and part-time EMTs and Paramedics and utilizes three ambulances and North Guilford Rescue Truck, which has ambulance transport capacity. Rescue Squad has one unit in downtown district and one in North Guilford and also operates Marine Division to answers calls on inland and open waterways. Rescue Squad’s vehicles offer basic life-support-level care to sick and injured in pre-hospital conditions.
