Social Services

Services provided by the Department of Social Services fall into three principal areas: community outreach; information and referrals; and crisis intervention. Services include counseling for senior citizens and others in need of assistance with financial, emotional or family problems. Home visits may be available.

The Department also provides assistance with applications for Title 19/Medicaid; CONNPACE (Connecticut Pharmaceutical Assistance Program); Renters Rebate; Tax Relief; Energy Assistance; Medicare Counseling; Home Health Care referrals; and Extended Care Planning/ Placement. The Department also has an Emergency Medical Fund and food pantry (Holiday Basket Program) on premises.

The Trumbull Senior Center programs include: education and recreation; Medicare counseling, information and referral; travel; and a daily nutrition program. A Notary Public is on the premises Monday through Friday. Free income tax assistance is provided through AARP. A safe driving course enables seniors to receive a reduced insurance rate. Activities include dancing (including monthly dinner dances), crafts, games, exercise programs, socials, movies, bingo and computer lessons.

The Senior Center’s nurse, Gail Ondy, is available every Wednesday and Thursday to provide height, weight and blood pressure screening. She provides wheelchair exercise and wellness coffee hours with guest speakers. The Salvation Army provides weekly hot lunches at the Center for a nominal fee. Box lunches are also available for take-home and weekends. The Transportation Department offers round-trip transportation to and from home.

A monthly newsletter keeps seniors up to date about activities and services. Newsletters are mailed to senior residents upon request and are also available at the libraries, Town Hall, local banks and stores.

Transportation Services

The Senior Center Transportation Department enables residents 60 years of age and older without transportation to attend Center programs such as the Salvation Army Nutrition Program (hot lunch), doctor's appointments, shopping and special town activities.

The Trumbull Library System offers a wide range of items and services for senior citizens: large-print books in all genres and a large collection of audiobooks on cassette and compact disc. Most of its extensive video collection is closed captioned for the hearing impaired. Senior citizens receive a $0.05 refund for each photocopy of a medical bill. Thursday is free movie day at the Library.
