Senior Services Coordinating Council

Mission to “meet needs of the elderly; to ease the burden of the ill, lonely, or those in need; and to bring our older citizens into the main stream of community life” and to assist in “initiation, expansion and/or improvement of social services for the elderly.” Ages served: 60+.

Municipal Agent for the Elderly works with Council, and can be contacted through it, to provide information, referrals, application assistance to seniors and their families. Norwalk Health Department Case Management for the Elderly

Provides residents 60 and older free assistance in understanding and applying for medical and financial benefits, Food Stamps, housing, home care, geriatric family planning, etc. Also provides advocacy, counseling, information, referrals for wide range of concerns. Spanish and Creole French interpreters available.

Norwalk Senior Center, Inc.

Nonprofit organization, operating in two locations, with mission of improving “quality of life for older adults” and promoting “dignity and independence through the aging process.” Annual $10 membership fee. Activity Programs include: Senior Cafe lunch, $3 donation requested—reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance; bingo, Thurs., 12:45 p.m.; bocce, Wed.,10 a.m. (weather permitting); billiards, most mornings and afternoons; card and tile games, variety of regularly scheduled games—call for information; Computer Learning Center; daily exercise, variety of programs for different ages and energy levels; Health & Wellness presentations on medical issues by Norwalk Hospital and area physicians; also: individual health screenings; blood pressure monitoring; nutritional counseling

Homebound and Community Outreach Programs hosted by Center include: • Meals on Wheels: Not-for-profit program in which meals are delivered at low cost to homes of residents unable to shop and/or prepare meals because of injury, illness or disability. • Medicare Counseling: Trained counselors will meet one-on-one with those on Medicare and guide them through maze of issues involved. • Individual and Group Counseling: Around Issues of Bereavement, Stress Management, and Family Conflicts. • Senior Housing Assistance Fund: Interest-free loans available to eligible seniors to help secure safe, affordable housing in Norwalk. • Caregiver’s Resource Center: Senior Center joins with Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging to provide information, counseling and referrals to those caring for older loved ones or for grandparents raising grandchildren.

Norwalk Senior Center provides door-to-door transportation to and from Center (11 Allen Rd.) and Norwalk Senior Center South (92 Cedar St.) in wheelchair-accessible vehicles for those who cannot transport themselves. Modest fee charged. Reservations required.
