Commission on Aging

Develops policies and exercises oversight concerning needs of Darien’s seniors regarding health, recreation, transportation and economics. With Department of Social Services, Commission publishes the SENIOR RESOURCE DIRECTORY, extensive and important compilation of public and private services available for seniors, their families and caregivers in Darien area.

Staff available to assist residents by phone, by e-mail, in Town Hall offices or in residents’ homes. Director is also Municipal Agent for Elderly Persons and serves as liaison with Commission on Aging and other resources and
programs serving elderly.

Department programs and services include:
 • Counseling, Information, Referrals
 • Friendly Visitor Program: visiting volunteers to older residents in need of companionship.
 • Carrier Alert Program: with U.S. Postal Service seeks to ensure safety of seniors living alone.
 • Health Promotion: visits by visiting nurse and initial assessments for home care.
 • Loan Closet: free, short-term loans of convalescent equipment.
 • Household Supply Closet: augments food pantries with personal and home cleaning supplies, paper goods, etc.
 • Financial Assistance: To eligible applicants. Short term.
 • Energy Assistance: To eligible applicants.
 • Rebate for Elderly and Disabled Who Rent.
 • Holiday Programs.
 • Emergency Support Services: list of individuals who would require assistance in event of emergency.
 • Handicapped Parking Permits Applications.
 • Resource Library: wide range of reading material on human services topics. With Commission on Aging, Department of Social Services publishes the SENIOR RESOURCE DIRECTORY.

Community Fund of Darien's Aging in Place

A sponsored program to help senior residents of Darien to live independently, comfortably, easily and with dignity in their own homes for as long as possible. For information, call (203) 202-2912 or contact: aipcoordinator@communityfunddarien.org

Transportation Services

Emergency Medical Services (Post 53)

Darien’s Emergency Medical Services provided by Post 53, Boy Scout Explorer Post open to both boys and girls. Unique, award-winning, all-volunteer organization of highly trained young people and adult advisors. Operates three fully equipped, state-of-the-art ambulances 24-7 year-round. Post 53 raises all its own funding.
